India Semiconductor Mission: Paving the Way for Chip Self-Reliance
The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), launched in 2021 under the Ministry of Electronics and IT, is a bold step by the Indian government to make the country a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing and design.
With a massive ₹76,000 crore (~$10 billion) incentive package, ISM aims to:
Set up semiconductor fabs and display fabs
Support chip design startups via the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme
Promote ATMP/OSAT units for chip packaging and testing
Build R&D and skilled talent pipelines
Major companies like Micron Technology and Tata Electronics have already committed to projects under ISM, signaling early momentum.
Why It Matters:
Semiconductors are critical for everything from smartphones and 5G to AI, EVs, and national defense. India currently imports most chips—ISM seeks to change that.
Challenges:
High capital costs
Need for foreign tech collaboration
Talent shortages in chip fabrication
Despite these, ISM could mark a turning point in India’s digital and strategic autonomy, strengthening its role in the global tech supply chain.
